When You Need Council Approval
You must apply for a Private Tree Works Application if you intend to:
- Remove or prune a tree that is not exempt under Council’s guidelines.
- Work on trees listed in the Significant Tree Register.
- Remove or prune trees within heritage conservation areas or those identified as heritage items.
- Remove more than five trees or vegetation that is part of a native vegetation community.
- Remove or prune trees associated with development that doesn’t qualify as exempt or complying development
Exemptions – When Approval Is Not Required
You may not need Council approval if:
- The tree is within 3 metres of an approved structure (e.g., house, garage) and is not listed as significant.
- You’re pruning branches directly overhanging the roofline of an approved structure, provided the work complies with Australian Standard AS4373-2007.
- The tree is dead, dying, or poses an imminent risk to life or property.
- The tree is a noxious weed as listed under the Biosecurity Act 2015

Pruning Guidelines
- Pruning is permitted for up to 10% of the live canopy only.
- Removal of deadwood is allowed.
- All pruning work must comply with Australian Standards AS4373-2007 – Pruning of Amenity Trees.
- Branch Management will not top your trees, we will only prune back to where it has been previously pruned.

Bushfire Prone Areas
Under the NSW Rural Fire Service 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Scheme, property owners in designated bushfire-prone areas may remove certain trees within 10 meters of a home without council permission. You can check if this applies to your property here.
